Konjevoda, MD previews IOLs, AI, and recovery advances at ESCRS 2026

Suzana Konjevoda, MD, a glaucoma subspecialist, cataract surgeon, and professor at the University of Zadar, as well as CEO of Eye Clinic LACRIMA, previewed the 2026 Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), held 11 to 15 September in London, United Kingdom, in an interview with Ophthalmology Times Europe.

Konjevoda said cataract and refractive surgery innovation is generating significant anticipation heading into this year's meeting, particularly around how new techniques are improving the overall patient experience. "I think there is a lot to look forward to, and I'm especially interested in how cataract and refractive surgery are improving patient comfort and recovery," she said.

Beyond the ocular surface and corneal nerve space, Konjevoda pointed to new intraocular lenses (IOLs) and presbyopia correction as key areas to watch, alongside a growing focus on artificial intelligence (AI). She noted that AI carried significant attention at last year's meeting and said she is curious to see which applications are ready to move from research into everyday clinical practice.

Konjevoda also highlighted the early recovery period following cataract surgery as an area of particular interest this year. She said patients consistently prioritise a quick, comfortable recovery alongside good visual outcomes, and pointed to dry eye and the broader patient experience during recovery as topics she is following closely at ESCRS 2026.
