Gamagori, Japan-Nidek Co. has received Japan's "National Commendation for Innovation" award for its peripheral processing of spectacle lenses.

The award, presented by the Japan Institute of Invention & Innovation, recognizes a patent that "acquires 3-D data of a lens frame, calculates the frame circumference, and corrects the bevel path data to compensate for the difference between the circumferences of bevel path and lens frame," the company said. The technology makes spectacle lens processing more precise, and is a "critically important feature" for lens manufacturing, according to the company.

The institute said the award honors people who have accomplished "extremely excellent inventions full of ingenuity, creativity, [and] originality" and have contributed greatly to excellent technology.
