VR and imaging advancements showcased at AAO 2025
Key Takeaways
- The Virtual Eye platform updates enhance diagnostic precision with ocular motility and cover testing modules, supporting 30 languages for improved patient engagement.
- Silverstone RGB retinal imaging device offers nine imaging modalities, enabling comprehensive retinal layer analysis for better diagnostic capabilities.
The AAO 2025 meeting offered a platform for companies to showcase their latest technologies to advance ophthalmic patient care.
The annual American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) meeting offered an opportunity for the ophthalmic industry to showcase their latest technologies designed to benefit patients and simplify the processes in an ophthalmology practice. Among the many products and solutions showcased at this meeting were VR vision testing and new imaging tools.
VR vision testing
The Virtual Eye platform will receive updates to introduce ocular motility and cover testing modules, as well as multi-exam integration, and expanded language support. According to the press release issued by Virtual Vision Health, the goals of these upgrades are for “streamlining clinical workflows while enhancing diagnostic precision and patient engagement.”1
The platform itself is a virtual reality (VR) testing system that delivers “immersive, data-driven visual field, progression analysis, and functional eye assessments.”1
The system includes several key features that can benefit patients and examiners to ensure that vision testing is a smooth process while gathering key data.
- The system supports 30 languages, expanding access for patients who are not English speakers. This includes “real-time, multilingual voice guidance, ensuring patients clearly understand testing instructions.” With this feature, testing can be more accurate.1
- The system’s new ocular motility module allows integrated eye-tracking sensors to detect irregularities while measuring the smoothness of eye movement as well as range and coordination.1
- The cover testing module allows for reproducible results using standardized VR targets and high-resolution motion tracking.
- The device eliminates the need for recalibrate between exams to reduce set-up and transition time.1
The system advancements were showcased at the recent AAO meeting, which was held in Orlando, Florida from October 18-20, 2025.
Launch of Silverstone RGB retinal imaging
The Silverstone RGB retinal imaging device from Optos made its global debut at the AAO meeting. This device can deliver a suite of 9 imaging modalities to better capture each layer of the retina.2
According to the press release issued by Optos, the modalities include:
- optomap color RGB
- optomap color RG
- optomap fluorescein angiography (FA)
- optomap indocyanine green angiography (ICG)
- optomap Sensory Red-Free
- optomap Choroidal Imaging
- optomap Green Autofluorescence (AF)
- optomap Blue Autofluorescence (AF)
- Swept-Source OCT2
Digital Duet 2.0 for glaucoma
Debuting at AAO 2025, the Digital Duet 2.0 platform from Lumenis is a redesigned system that focuses on providing high-resolution imaging for glaucoma and posterior capsulotomy treatment. According to the company’s press release, “Clinicians can capture detailed images of various pathologies—including angle structures—track disease progression, and utilize real-time visuals for training and education, enhancing both patient care and professional development. Adjustable brightness and optimized visualization ensure precise and consistent imaging across procedures.”3
These features along with simplified workflows can support automation and collaboration across providers and departments.3
