The virtual reality technology lets patients with cataract experience lens options in real-life scenarios, while a new strategic partnership aims to expand VR adoption.

VirtuaLens introduced a virtual reality (VR) platform (Immersive IOL Simulator) that allows patients facing cataract surgery to review and differentiate various lens options.1 The immersive platform helps patients understand how monofocal, multifocal, and premium lenses may enhance daily activities in 3D scenarios such as night driving, playing sports without glasses, reading comfortably, or working long hours at a computer, according to the company.1

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed and transformative ophthalmic procedures, with millions of cases in the US and worldwide each year.1 Despite its prevalence, patients often struggle to understand how different lens types might affect their everyday vision, according to the company.1

“For the first time, the patient can actually put on a VR headset and experience a preview of what each lens offers in multiple real-life settings,” said Robert H. Osher, MD, in an exclusive quote with the Eye Care Network. Osher is professor of ophthalmology, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; medical director emeritus, Cincinnati Eye Institute in Ohio; and founder and editor, Video Journal of Cataract, Refractive, and Glaucoma Surgery. “Once the patient has enjoyed a stunning preview of what different IOLs offer in a variety of settings, I expect that most patients will be able to decide with confidence which IOL they prefer.”

“Allowing patients to see and experience their lens options before surgery fosters confidence, trust, and understanding, empowering surgeons to guide each patient to the right IOL choice with clarity and certainty,” said John Branch, MD, chief executive officer (CEO) and co-founder of VirtuaLens.1

How might the partnership expand VR adoption?

On the heels of this product launch, VirtuaLens announced a strategic partnership with Virtual Vision Health to support broader adoption of VR technologies for eye care.2 Virtual Vision Health’s platform (Virtual Eye VR) offers a comprehensive approach to vision screening, integrating multiple assessments—including visual field testing, progression monitoring, color sensitivity, and visual acuity—into a standalone system, according to the company.2

“This collaboration amplifies our ability to deliver thoughtful advancements for clinicians and patients. Together, we are redefining the future of eye care diagnostics and education worldwide,” said Matteo Ziff, CEO and co-founder of Virtual Vision Health.2

Per the agreement, Virtual Vision Health will manage commercialization and distribution of the simulator in the US and Brazil, while VirtuaLens continues to oversee product development, direct sales, and customer service.2 Distribution in other global markets remains under the responsibility of VirtuaLens and its existing international partners, according to the company.2

“VR opens the door to more than just diagnostics or cataract education. VR tools like ours show how portable, accessible VR can give doctors new ways to educate, screen, and manage patients while also extending care to people across different economic backgrounds,” said John Branch, MD, CEO and co-founder of VirtuaLens, in an exclusive quote with the Eye Care Network. “By reducing the need for bulky equipment and creating immersive, easy-to-understand experiences, VR can make health care more inclusive and scalable—not only in eye care but across broader areas of medicine.”
