Varicose veins linked to central serous chorioretinopathy in large cohort study

A higher risk of central serous chorioretinopathy and serous pigment epithelial detachment are associated with varicose veins.

A study in the British Journal of Ophthalmology1 reported that patients with varicose veins had a significantly higher risk of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) than matched controls and a higher risk of serous pigment epithelial detachment (PED). The study authors are from the Byers Eye Institute, Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, CA; Ophthalmology, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Palo Alto; and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Department of Ophthalmology, Boston.
