Rayner announces Sophi Phaco System in the US
Key Takeaways
- Rayner's Sophi Phacoemulsification System, cleared by the FDA, is now available to US cataract surgeons, enhancing surgical efficiency and mobility.
- The system's features include peristaltic and Venturi triple-pump fluidics, an intuitive interface, and wireless power, facilitating faster setup and patient turnover.
The Swiss-designed phaco platform provides mobility, simplified workflows, and reduced surgical waste for cataract procedures, according to the company.
The FDA has given 501(k) clearance to Rayner’s Sophi (Swiss Ophthalmology Innovation) Phacoemulsification System, making it available to cataract surgeons in the US, according to the company.1
The platform was designed with a focus on mobility, simplicity, and safety, which Rayner noted helps maximize surgical efficiency.1 According to the company, the system is suited for use in ambulatory surgical centers, office-based practices, and hospital networks.1 Key features include peristaltic and Venturi triple-pump fluidics, an intuitive user interface, and wireless power transfer.1 These features enable faster setup, quicker patient turnover, and greater mobility without compromising patient safety, according to the company website.
Advancing global sustainability
The phaco system was developed to support more sustainable ophthalmic procedures, according to the company. Rayner referenced a multisociety position paper produced in collaboration with the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the Latin American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, along with EyeSustain, a global coalition representing 55 ophthalmology societies.2,3 According to Rayner, the initiative aims to advance sustainability in eye care through education, research, innovation, and advocacy.
The position paper estimated “a 307-kg reduction in discarded plastic per 1,000 cataract surgeries using Sophi’s day cassette option,”2,3 thus reducing surgical waste and carbon footprint. This option is expected to be available in the US market soon.
“US surgeons deserve an innovative alternative to conventional phaco technology, and Sophi delivers that,” noted Tim Clover, chief executive officer of Rayner.1 “Clinics worldwide tell us they’re running more efficiently and cutting costs and waste, so we’re looking forward to bringing these benefits to surgeons across the US through our new team of surgical equipment specialists.”
