Fact checked by: Sheryl Stevenson

Host Deborah Ristvedt, DO, welcomes Trattler to discuss how early inspirations, mentorship, collaboration, and a philosophy of simplifying complex concepts have shaped his ophthalmology career.

In this latest episode of the Ophthalmology Times® “Beyond The Walls” podcast, host Deborah Ristvedt, DO, of Vance Thompson Vision, sits down with William B. Trattler, MD, to explore the experiences, influences, and philosophies that have shaped his career in ophthalmology. The discussion covers early inspirations, approaches to teaching, mentorship initiatives, clinical collaboration, and the evolving role of technology in patient care. Trattler is a refractive, corneal and cataract eye surgeon at the Center For Excellence In Eye Care in Miami, Florida.

Early influences and educational philosophy

Trattler traces his introduction to medicine to his father, an ophthalmologist, whom he describes as “just such an incredible role model.” A formative childhood experience further shaped his perspective when a classmate shared how his father’s surgery restored her grandmother’s ability to drive. Reflecting on that moment, he notes, “in ophthalmology, where heroes every day, we're making a difference in people's lives.” These early experiences instilled a sense of purpose and demonstrated the tangible impact of ophthalmic care.

During medical school, Trattler coauthored Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple, motivated by a desire to simplify complex material. “We should just make it ridiculously simple,” he explains, highlighting his use of visual aids and associations to enhance learning. This philosophy carries into his clinical practice, where he emphasizes simplifying the interpretation of diagnostic tools by distinguishing “what’s normal, versus abnormal,” while recognizing the variability in findings and the importance of repetition and experience.

Collaboration, mentorship, and the future of care

The episode also examines challenges in practice, including a complex surgical case involving Descemet membrane detachment. Trattler describes collaborating with a colleague to achieve a successful outcome. He underscores the value of seeking help and sharing expertise, emphasizing professional collaboration in navigating difficult cases.

Mentorship is a central theme, reflected in Trattler’s development of the Rising Stars in Ophthalmology program. Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, the initiative provides early-career physicians opportunities to present and engage with peers. “Let's make this forum… and give them an opportunity,” he explains, illustrating his commitment to supporting the next generation of ophthalmologists.

The conversation includes reflections on balancing professional and personal life, ongoing practice growth, generational transitions, and the future of ophthalmology. Trattler highlights interest in advancing surgical technologies, MIGS procedures, and AI-driven patient education as opportunities to enhance understanding, continuity of care, and patient outcomes.
