Rockville, MD-Sept. 15 is the application deadline for two new fellowships from the ARVO Foundation for Eye Research (AFER) that mark the first time the organization will fund research projects rather than solely recognize researchers’ achievements.

The AFER/Genentech Age-related Macular Degeneration [AMD] Fellowship and the AFER and Vistakon Dry Eye Fellowship each will provide $40,000 to an investigator aged less than 45 years at the time of the application deadline. The 1-year fellowships must begin within 6 months of the award notification on Dec. 1. A committee of representatives from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and AFER who are experts in the areas of AMD and dry eye research will review the applications.

“AFER is delighted to support the research of our young investigators,” said Nicolas G. Bazan, MD, PhD, FARVO and AFER chairman. “It is their minds at work and their determination that will make a difference in the future of eye research. Research funding of innovative approaches opens the door to finding cures for eye disease and blindness.”
