Jacksonville, FL-The latest edition of the radio show “Healthy Vision with Dr. Val Jones” tackles sports vision.

Graham Erickson, OD, FAAO, FCOVD, professor of optometry, Pacific University, Portland, OR, and past chairman of the Sports Vision Section council of the American Optometric Association, and Olympic champion sprinter Allyson Felix talk with Dr. Jones about the relationship between vision and sports performance.

The radio show, which debuted in June, is devoted to educating and improving the eye health of Americans. The program is hosted by Val Jones, MD, chief executive officer of Better Health LLC and author of the blog “Dr. Val and the Voice of Reason.”

Dr. Erickson, who has studied the impact of vision on sports performance and has worked with hundreds of athletes to maximize their vision for individual sports and lifestyle, said that different sports require different vision skills, such as visual clarity, good peripheral vision, central vision, depth perception, and visual motor processing.

In addition to offering advice on how to keep eyes healthy for better performance, Dr. Erickson also shared some exercises that professional athletes, weekend warriors, and young competitors can do at home to get their attention more focused on their visual system.

Allyson Felix told Dr. Jones that having as few visual distractions as possible is a critical part of helping her perform at a high level.
