National Eye Institute posts clinical cases, pathology online

The National Eye Institute (NEI) launches an online resource for pathologists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, and students. The David G. Cogan Ophthalmic Pathology Collection, which comprises 1,040 ophthalmic and 3,000 pathology slides, may be viewed at www.nei.nih.gov.

David G. Cogan, MD, collected the clinical descriptions and photographs during his career as both a clinical and research ophthalmologist. Prior to joining NEI, Dr. Cogan served as director of the Howe Laboratory of the Harvard Medical School, Boston, for 33 years. He also was among the initial members of the National Advisory Eye Council of the NEI.

“The Cogan Collection has the enormous potential to have an impact on the teaching of ophthalmic pathology and clinical ophthalmology with the resultant improvement in diagnosis and treatment of patients,” said Paul A. Sieving, MD, PhD, director of the NEI.
