London-based pediatric ophthalmology service unveiled

Bedford, England-Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust took over the management of Bedford Hospital's ophthalmology department at the South Wing to form a new pediatric ophthalmology service.

Bedford, England-Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust took over the management of Bedford Hospital's ophthalmology department at the South Wing to form a new pediatric ophthalmology service.

Beginning the partnership 18 months ago, the deal will officially be launched in January 2008. Staff will still remain NHS workers but will belong to and be paid by Moorfields Eye Hospital. Specialists will travel from the London site to Bedford on a regular basis and Melanie Hingorani will lead the service as consultant pediatric ophthalmologist.

"I had a number of procedures, including two operations, on my eyes as a child, so I know first-hand the importance of a specialist service like this one," said Andrew Morgan, chief executive of Bedfordshire Primary Care Trust (PCT). "This is one of many services that will continue Bedford Hospital's upward trend. Moorfields at Bedford is an excellent service and I hope all those who use it find it as such."
