Functional OCT takes retinal imaging where structure alone cannot go

Why AI-driven functional imaging could change how clinicians assess and treat retinal disease

Conventional optical coherence tomography (OCT) has transformed the diagnosis and monitoring of retinal disease, but it tells only part of the story. In conditions such as geographic atrophy (GA), structural imaging alone cannot reliably predict how a patient will see—a disconnect that has complicated both clinical management and the design of clinical trials. Functional OCT (OCT-F), an investigational artificial intelligence (AI)–based tool trained on OCT and microperimetry data, aims to bridge that gap by generating high-density sensitivity maps without requiring a separate microperimetry device. OCT-F is currently under development and is not yet cleared by the FDA or other regulators.
