FDA clears multipurpose disinfecting solution for contact lenses

Article

The FDA has cleared a new-generation multipurpose disinfecting solution (RevitaLens Ocutec, Abbott Medical Optics [AMO]) for silicone hydrogel and conventional soft contact lenses.

Abbott Park, IL-The FDA has cleared a new-generation multipurpose disinfecting solution (RevitaLens Ocutec, Abbott Medical Optics [AMO]) for silicone hydrogel and conventional soft contact lenses, according to the company.

“This advanced, next-generation solution establishes a new standard of disinfecting technology for contact lens wearers,” said James V. Mazzo, senior vice president, AMO. “Proper contact lens care, including a rub-and-rinse regimen using [the new solution], will help patients achieve clean and comfortable lenses while enhancing overall lens-wearing satisfaction.”

Key characteristics of the new solution, according to the company, include high microorganism kill rates, the ability to remove proteins from the lens surface, the effective killing of Acanthamoeba and Fusarium, the reduction of corneal staining, and the minimization of risk of eye complications.

Abbott began shipping the solution to U.S. retailers last month. The product also has CE Mark approval in Europe.
