Dr. Weinreb named chairman at UCSD

Robert N. Weinreb, MD, has been named chair of the department of ophthalmology and director of the Shiley Eye Center at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, effective June 15.

San Diego-Robert N. Weinreb, MD, has been named chairman of the department of ophthalmology and director of the Shiley Eye Center at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, effective June 15.

Dr. Weinreb, who is a member of the Ophthalmology Times Editorial Advisory Board, had served as distinguished professor of ophthalmology and holds the Morris Gleich, MD, Chair of Glaucoma at UC San Diego. He replaces outgoing chairman Stuart I. Brown, MD, who steps down as Shiley Eye Center director after 28 years.

Dr. Weinreb has served as president of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the World Glaucoma Association, and the American Glaucoma Society. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Watson Medal of the University of Cambridge.
