Capt. Steven Schallhorn, MD, recently retired from the U.S. Navy, joins the ClearView Eye & Laser Medical Center in San Diego. Beginning May 1, Dr. Schallhorn will be providing vision-correction surgery along with FDA clinical research at the center.

Capt. Steven Schallhorn, MD, recently retired from the U.S. Navy, joins the ClearView Eye & Laser Medical Center in San Diego. Beginning May 1, Dr. Schallhorn will be providing vision-correction surgery along with FDA clinical research at the center.

Dr. Schallhorn served in the U.S. military for 30 years where he was director of the cornea service and refractive surgery at the Naval Medical Center San Diego (Balboa Hospital) and the refractive surgery program manager for the U.S. Navy. Dr. Schallhorn was the ophthalmologist selected to evaluate the Chief of Naval Operations, as well as Surgeon General of the Navy, Admirals, Naval Aviators, SEALS, Sailors, and Marines. He conceived of and initiated the first refractive surgery programs for the U.S. Armed Forces to study the visual recovery and performance characteristics of PRK and LASIK before the FDA approved excimer lasers.
