Omaha, NE

-Tom Hejkal, MD, PhD, became the McGaw Memorial Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) on Dec. 1. He had been serving as interim chairman since May following the April death of Carl Camras, MD.

“Dr. Hejkal has done a great job as interim chairman, and he deserves the opportunity to lead the department and take it to the next level,” said John Gollan, MD, PhD, dean of the UN College of Medicine. “We have developed a number of future goals for the department, with one of the key goals to continue the development of research through the recruitment of outstanding new faculty. I know Dr. Hejkal has the skills to get the job done, and I’m confident that he will lead the department with distinction.”

Dr. Hejkal joined UNMC in 1994 as an assistant professor, became associate professor in 2000, and became professor in 2008. Since 1996, he has served as residency program director for the department. In 2007, he was appointed vice chairman for clinical operations.

A member of the UNMC Faculty Senate for the past eight years, Dr. Hejkal has served as a board member for the Lions Eye Bank of Nebraska and as president of the Omaha Ophthalmological Society.
