California health plans cover photochromic lenses

San Francisco-Blue Shield of California and Blue Shield of California Life and Health Insurance Co. recently became the first U.S. health plans to offer coverage of photochromic lenses in all new vision plans. Members will receive coverage of up to $200 with a $130 eyewear frame allowance for photochromic lenses.

San Francisco-Blue Shield of California and Blue Shield of California Life and Health Insurance Co. recently became the first U.S. health plans to offer coverage of photochromic lenses in all new vision plans. Members will receive coverage of up to $200 with a $130 eyewear frame allowance for photochromic lenses.

"Eye health is integral to overall health and wellness, and to many people's job performance as well," said Bob Repke, vice president of the Blue Shield Ancillary Group. "As more doctors prescribe photochromics to enhance and protect eyesight, we are making sure our vision plan members are covered for their eye-care needs."

All Blue Shield of California vision plans include an annual eye exam. Plans also include coverage for shatter-resistant polycarbonate lenses for dependent children.
