Best ophthalmic hospitals in the U.S.

In preparation for U.S. News World & Report’s annual best ophthalmic hospitals for 2015-which will be announced next month-we have compiled the news site’s list of the top programs from last year. These 10 hospitals were coined the best for difficult cases and procedures by at least 5% of ophthalmology respondents to U.S. News’ surveys in 2012, 2013, and 2014.

 

 

In preparation for the U.S. News and World Report annual ranking of best ophthalmic hospitals for 2015-which will be announced in a few weeks-here are the top 10 programs off the news site’s list from last year.

These 10 hospitals were coined the best for difficult cases and procedures by at least 5% of ophthalmology respondents to U.S. News’ surveys in 2012, 2013, and 2014.

10. New York Eye and Ear Infirmary

Ophthalmology scorecard: 8.5/100

New York Eye and Ear Infirmary was ranked nationally in one adult specialty and was given fourth overall regionally.

9. USC Eye Institute-Keck Medical Center of USC

Ophthalmology scorecard: 9.9/100

Keck Medical Center of USC was ranked nationally in four adult specialties, was high performing in seven of those specialties, and placed eighth overall regionally.

8. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

Ophthalmology scorecard: 12/100

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics was ranked nationally in nine adult and eight pediatric specialties, and was also high performing in four adult specialties. It also placed first overall regionally.

 

 

7. Cleveland Clinic

Ophthalmology scorecard: 12.6/100

The Cleveland Clinic was ranked nationally in 14 adult and 10 pediatric specialties. It scored impressively high in patient safety, because it demonstrated “commitment to reducing accidents and medical mistakes,” the news site wrote.

The clinic was also ranked first overall regionally, as well as in the Cleveland metro area.

6. Duke University Hospital

Ophthalmology scorecard: 12.9/100

Duke University Hospital was ranked nationally in 13 adult and nine pediatric specialties, and was high performing in one adult specialty. It scored impressively high in patient safety, because the hospital demonstrated “commitment to reducing accidents and medical mistakes,” the news site wrote.

The hospital was also ranked first overall regionally in North Carolina, as well as in the Raleigh-Durham metro area.

5. Stein and Doheny Eye Institutes, UCLA Medical Center

Ophthalmology scorecard: 27.5/100

UCLA Medical Center ranked nationally in 15 adult and eight pediatric specialties. The hospital also placed first regionally, as well as in the Los Angeles metro area.

4. Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Massachusetts General Hospital

Ophthalmology scorecard: 29.9/100

Massachusetts General Hospital was ranked nationally in 16 adult and 5 pediatric specialties. The teaching hospital also placed first regionally and in the Boston metro area.

 

 

 

3. Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital

Ophthalmology scorecard: 58.2/100

Johns Hopkins Hospital was ranked nationally in 15 adult and 10 pediatric specialties. The teaching hospital was also ranked first regionally in Maryland and in the Baltimore metro area.

2. Wills Eye Hospital

Ophthalmology scorecard: 58.6/100

Wills Eye Hospital was ranked nationally in one adult specialty-ophthalmology. The hospital placed 11th regionally in Pennsylvania and eighth in the Philadelphia metro area.

Ophthalmology scorecard: 67.3/100

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute was ranked nationally in one adult specialty-ophthalmology. The hospital also placed seventh regionally in Florida and first in the Miami metro area.
