ASCRS suggests new term for presbyopia

The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) is encouraging eye-care professionals to refer to presbyopia as age-related focus dysfunction.

Fairfax, VA-The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) is encouraging eye-care professionals to refer to presbyopia as age-related focus dysfunction.

Doing so might improve public understanding of the condition and management options for it beyond reading glasses, according to the organization.

With Interbrand Health, the ASCRS Foundation developed the new term and text to be used to help educate the public. The organization encourages eye-care professionals to use the terminology and suggested language for patient education purposes in pamphlets, practice advertising, practice Web sites, patient counseling, and in other similar situations.
