Nuclear genes, other risk factors may activate mitochondrial LHON gene
Fort Lauderdale, FL-In 1861, an Italian couple emigrated from Verona to rural Brazil. Their 300 descendants spreading over seven generations have given scientists a unique opportunity to study many environmental factors that may have influenced the expression of Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON).
