Inside NYEE’s new refractive solutions center with Kira Manusis, MD

From laser vision correction to adjustable lens implants, the Center for Refractive Solutions at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai offers advanced options for every stage of life.

The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE) recently announced the launch of its new Center for Refractive Solutions under the leadership of Kira Manusis, MD, director of the center.1 Designed as a one-stop facility, the center integrates advanced diagnostic and surgical technologies to offer customized refractive options across all ages and refractive errors.

“There’s all this buzz about artificial intelligence. Anywhere you turn, it’s all about AI, right?” Manusis said, noting the increasing number of patients inquiring about “AI technology for our vision.” This patient interest catalyzed the center’s creation, allowing NYEE to streamline refractive care with state-of-the-art equipment and experienced faculty under one roof.

The center offers laser vision correction procedures such as LASIK, PRK, and SMILE for younger patients, and refractive lens exchange for those in their 40s and beyond. “That lens is there for life,” she emphasizes, “and that lens can reduce dependence on glasses or completely eliminate dependence on glasses.” For patients with extreme myopia, EVO implantable collamer lens technology offers a reversible alternative to traditional surgery: “It’s just like a contact lens, but it’s inside the eye.”

For patients with cataracts or coexisting ocular pathologies like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration, NYEE utilizes advanced intraocular lenses, including the Light Adjustable Lens. “With this lens, if we need to fine-tune vision after surgery, we can do that a couple of months after,” said Manusis, which enables customized outcomes tailored to each patient’s visual goals.

Equally important, the center houses dedicated diagnostic spaces allowing thorough pre- and postoperative assessment. “Patients love to see new technology,” Manusis added. “We can also teach them about their eyes and their options.” Given NYEE’s size and tradition of teaching, the center will also enrich resident education. In short, NYEE's Center for Refractive Solutions aims to deliver personalized, cutting-edge refractive care for every stage of life.
