Eye institute director praised for leadership

New York, NY—The director of the National Eye Institute, Paul A. Sieving, MD, PhD, has been awarded Lighthouse International's 2005 Pisart Vision Award in recognition of his contributions to the study of retinal diseases.

Tara A. Cortes, RN, PhD, president and chief executive officer of the organization, who presented the award during its Mrs. Cecilia Schupf & Paul J. Schupf Centennial Invitational Symposia Series in October, said Dr. Sieving also provided outstanding leadership in creating research environments and encouraging junior colleagues to contribute to the field of retinal function.

The symposium brought together leading researchers and practitioners in the fields of low vision and diabetes to discuss the latest developments in treatment and research for people with diabetes-related vision loss. Participants included ophthalmologists, endocrinologists, optometrists, vision and psychosocial researchers, and vision rehabilitation professionals.
