Waltham, MA-BD Medical, a segment of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Co.), has introduced its new line of disposable instruments for ophthalmic surgery.

The stainless steel BD Visitec disposable instruments are designed to reduce the chances of toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS), which is sometimes associated with the improper cleaning and sterilization of reused ophthalmic surgical instruments. The line includes forceps, an eye speculum, needle holder, Vannas scissors, Buratto's hook, and straight micro-manipulator.

The company also developed the BD Beaver Safety Cataract Knife System, with a 2.2-mm slit knife designed for use with smaller incisions. The knife also has an integrated retractable shield to protect against accidental injuries.
