CIBA Vision sells contact lenses, joins Upromise plan

Atlanta—Unilens Corp. USA (Unilens),the wholly owned subsidiary of Unilens Vision Inc., has acquired the Aquaflex and Softcon EW soft contact lens product lines from CIBA Vision.

Atlanta-Unilens Corp. USA (Unilens),the wholly owned subsidiary of Unilens Vision Inc., has acquired the Aquaflex and Softcon EW soft contact lens product lines from CIBA Vision.

"With one of the widest ranges of specialty and conventional lenses in the industry, CIBA Vision is committed to ensuring an extensive range of options remains available for unique patient needs," said Erich Bauman, OD, new vice-president of CIBA Vision's Global Specialty Lens Business. "We are pleased that a reputable manufacturer such as Unilens will continue to offer Aquaflex and Softcon EW."

The products acquired consist of an extended-wear conventional spherical lens (Softcon EW) and a daily wear conventional lens (Aquaflex) that will be marketed and distributed by the Lombart lens division of Unilens Corp. USA under the existing product brand names.

"Having made great strides in ensuring reliable delivery times and consistent product quality, we are committed to transforming our Specialty Lens Business by combining CIBA Vision's strengths in new material technology with new designs that will meet the more challenging needs of our customers," said Steve Osbaldeston, president of CIBA Vision's Global Specialty Lens and Lens Care Businesses. "With 22 years of specialty lens experience in both private practice and industry settings, Dr. Bauman is the ideal leader to grow and shape the future of this highly specialized business."

Dr. Bauman was previously general manager of CIBA Vision's Benelux operation. He has held various positions within CIBA Vision in the areas of clinical research, marketing, and business development and licensing.

In other news, CIBA Vision has teamed up with Upromise Inc. The program allows families to save for college when they buy the company's contact lens care products, including the new AQuify 5-Minute Multi-Purpose Solution (MPS) and AQuify Long-Lasting Comfort Drops.

Three percent of the purchase price is applied toward college savings when purchased at more than 20,000 participating U.S. grocery and drug stores. Rewards for contact lens purchases are still being structured.
