New Orleans-Advanced Medical Optics Inc. is launching the newest version of its Amadeus microkeratome with features that make it interactive and safer than before.

The Amadeus II claims numerous "firsts," including an interactive voice confirmation feature that announces "I'm ready, doctor" when it is ready for the procedure to begin.

The company, which chose to launch the device during the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting here, also claims to offer the first microkeratome with full customization of all flap creation parameters, the first to test all functional parameters prior to flap creation, the first with built-in assembly guides to ensure proper assembly, the first with a titanium microkeratome, and the first device to allow for altitude adjustment to maximize suction performance.

Current Amadeus owners can upgrade their existing device with the newer features, the company said.
