National Correct Coding Initiative enables better reporting of multiple services

It is imperative, especially in uncertain economic times, for physicians to be thoroughly familiar with Medicare's National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI). This initiative was put forth in 1996 in order to promote correct coding and to serve as a ready mechanism by which to reduce improper coding.

Category III codes provide key to new technologies

Ophthalmologists are well acquainted with the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), but many ophthalmologists are only familiar with CPT's "Category I" codes. It is important for ophthalmologists to understand code Category III, since many eye-care services have appeared or will appear in this category.

Some codes recognize lengthy office visits

Time may be considered a key factor in selecting the level of service when at least half of the encounter consists of counseling or coordination of care.
