Vance Thomspon, MD, to take helm as ASCRS president

Thompson will assume the presidency of the ASCRS, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024. The organization kicks off its 2024 annual meeting Friday at Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston.

Vance Thompson, MD, will take the lead as president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) as the organization kicks off its 2024 annual meeting Friday at Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston.

Thompson will take the help ASCRS president on Friday, April 5, as the organization marks its 50th anniversary. Thompson currently serves as the vice president/president elect of the ASCRS.

A specialist in laser vision correction and advanced cataract surgery, Thompson is the director of refractive surgery for Vance Thompson Vision in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The center also has locations in Alexandria, Minnesota; Billings, Montana; Boseman, Montana; Omaha, Nebraska; South Sioux City, Nebraska; and West Fargo, North Dakota.

According to a Sioux Falls Business report, over the years, Thompson has served ASCRS in a number of capacities, from presenter and webinar host to an adviser on the ASCRS Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee.1

According to the report, Thompson’s priorities for his 1-year term as president include working to grow the relevant, cutting-edge, peer-to-peer education that occurs through the organization, which helps doctors help patients worldwide.

“I am super excited to be a part of this look back to honor those who came before us who helped lay the foundation of our great profession,” he told the publication. “I am also excited to help lead the work being put into how we help the current generation of ophthalmologists and their practices navigate the future in the areas that are most interesting and concerning to them. It is such an honor to be a member of and now lead an organization that cares so deeply about helping its members be their best.”

Thompson is a graduate of the University of South Dakota, and the University of South Dakota Medical School. He served his ophthalmology residency at the University of Missouri/Columbia, and his fellowship at Hunkeler Eye Centers Fellowship in Kansas City, Kansas.2
