Guidelines for Case Study Submissions

Guidelines for Case Study Submissions

Residents are required to submit a Case Study to Ophthalmology Times (See attached Case Study Example) that includes a write-up of about 1,000 words on an ocular surface disease case, along with an abstract and PowerPoint Presentation (7 to 9 minutes in length) by Monday, August 17th, 2015.

The case study must focus on a pharmacological approach as it relates to an ocular surface disease patient.  Failure to meet this requirement will result in elimination from the program.

The case study and abstract should be written using a Word software application. The abstract should include an overview of the case study, noting the patient’s symptom(s), diagnosis, and treatment. Please remember to remove patients’ names from any clinical data that you submit (per HIPPA regulations).

The Case Study should include:

History

Describe in detail the case history of a patient who has presented at the resident’s institution. Include a review of the patient’s symptoms and medical history as they pertain to this particular case. Note possible complications and standard treatment methods.

Examination

Provide the results from a thorough ophthalmologic examination of the patient. Note any findings of particular significance to this case.

Discussion and diagnosis

Present a discussion of the problem this patient poses. The discussion should be specific and practical. The situation should let the OT Review Board and readers examine the problem and the problem-solving process and learn a lesson from others’ experience.

Conclusion

Explain the significance or importance of this case to ophthalmology.
