Key Points

Fort Worth, TX-Alcon Inc. has launched an online educational resource, http://www.cataractsurgery.com/, for people who have cataracts, and their caregivers.

"Increasingly, we find that our patients and their families are looking to the Internet for information on health care," said Stephen Lane, MD, clinical professor of ophthalmology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. "[The Web site] will improve communication between the patient, the physician, and the practice staff, as well as allow patients to have a clearer understanding of their surgical options."

The Web site includes information on cataracts, cataract surgery, and IOL options. In addition, it features details on preparing for an eye examination and has videos, cataract illustrations, patient testimonials, and a cataract resource library.

A Spanish-language version of the Web site is scheduled to be available in the first half of 2009.
