Madison, NJ-Bausch + Lomb (B+L) has voluntarily recalled an eye drop (Soothe Xtra Hydration) after receiving from consumers “a small number” of reports of particles, which the company later identified as mold, in the tips of the bottles.

No adverse events have been reported.

The company has notified retailers and eye-care professionals and is asking consumers to return the product to the company regardless of whether they have seen particles in the tips of their bottles. Patients may obtain information about returning the product and being reimbursed by calling the recall hotline at 877/907-9964
or the B+L customer service number at 800/553-5340. The customer service line is available weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.

The eye drops have been available since April in the United States and are not sold elsewhere. About 1.3 million bottles have been distributed, according to the company.

B+L officials said they will determine future product distribution after the company completes an investigation, which could last several months.
