AAO, CDC advise on protecting against infection

San Francisco?In response to the alert issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about an outbreak of Acanthamoeba keratitis and the voluntary recall by Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) of its Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) offers advice to all contact lens wearers to reduce the risk of eye infections.

San Francisco-In response to the alert issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about an outbreak of Acanthamoeba keratitis and the voluntary recall by Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) of its Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) offers advice to all contact lens wearers to reduce the risk of eye infections.

"While the risk of infection remains low, contact lenses are medical devices that require the commitment of their wearers to handle and care for them correctly," said H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD, AAO executive vice president. "Proper lens care is critical to ensure that your eyes are protected from potentially dangerous eye disease."

The academy offers these consumer tips in light of the voluntary product recall by AMO:
